Four chains compared
Three to sixteen building blocks. Length says nothing about effects, but a lot about synthesis and analysis: the longer the chain, the more can go wrong.
What does not belong in the chain
Synthesis never makes only the intended molecule. Sometimes a building block is missing. HPLC separates those chains because they behave slightly differently.
